Why Romania, Why Now: A View for Investors from Türkiye
Many of the investors I meet from Türkiye have already built solar, wind or storage at home. They know EPC, they know grid operators, they know how to negotiate with suppliers. When they look at Romania, they are not asking whether they can do it. They are asking whether it is worth it, and whether the timing is right. I believe the answer to both is yes, and here is why.
The first reason is simple: Romania is inside the European Union. A project here sells into an EU power market, is financed by European banks, and is built under European rules. Power purchase agreements and many revenue contracts are often denominated in euros, which for an investor used to currency volatility is not a small detail. Since 2025 Romania is also a full member of the Schengen area, which makes moving people and equipment simpler than it used to be.
The second reason is the need. Romania is retiring older coal capacity, demand for clean energy from industry is growing, and the grid needs flexibility it does not yet have. That is why storage has become one of the most active segments of the market, and why hybrid projects combining solar and BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) are attracting so much attention. On top of the market itself, the state has introduced CfD (Contracts for Difference) auctions that offer long-term price stability, and EU funds continue to support part of the investment in renewables and storage.
The third reason is proximity, and I do not only mean distance. Bucharest is a short flight from Istanbul and Ankara. There is a long history of Turkish business in Romania, a community that understands both cultures, and a way of doing business that Turkish investors recognise quickly. Many deals that would feel distant in Western Europe feel familiar here.
Now, the honest part. Romania is not an easy market for those who arrive unprepared. Grid capacity is limited in many areas, permits take time, and the rules on grid connection, which I wrote about in earlier articles on this blog, can surprise anyone who reads only the headline numbers. Projects presented as ready often turn out not to be. The difference between a good investment and a frustrating one usually comes down to who you work with on the ground.
Why now? Because the window is still open, but it will not stay open forever. Grid connections are getting harder to secure, the best sites are being taken, and prices for well-prepared projects are rising as more international capital arrives. Investors who enter in the next one or two years will build their portfolio at a very different cost than those who wait until the market is fully mature.
This is where BRES ENERGY fits. Our platform brings together a multi-gigawatt portfolio of solar, wind, hybrid and storage projects across Romania, structured and prepared for due diligence, and constantly renewed as projects find their investors and new ones join. We are also investors ourselves, and many of the people we work with every day come from Türkiye. We understand both sides of the table, and we speak both languages, literally.
Romania is not the next Türkiye, and it does not need to be. It is a different market, with different rules and a different moment. For investors who are ready to read it carefully, it may be the best opportunity in the region right now.
